“We are looking for a highly motivated individual to live and work with our communities in rural Uganda. The key aims of this 6 month placement are to continue the development of the savings groups and help community members start up their own income generation activities.”

Our Uganda Deputy Project Coordinator will work with our local volunteers and our beneficiaries, as well as with AVS, our local project partner in Uganda. S/he will be responsible for supporting the rural communities through the development of their project/business, organising business and skills training and providing opportunities for technology utilization. General project management responsibilities include managing local staff, budgets, programmes, report writing, and researching partnership expansion possibilities. This position offers the opportunity to develop project management, field research and training skills, and it requires a highly motivated, business minded, flexible self-starter who can successfully work cross-culturally.

Volunteers will work with a team of local staff to achieve short and long-term program objectives.


a. Project Management and Training:

1. Development of Village Savings and Loans Association groups (community based micro-finance approach):

  • support the project development: supervise the quality of the local coordinator's work, measure the social impact of the developed microfinance groups, evaluate options of program's growth
  • provide capacity building on records keeping and financial management of the project
  • Refreshment training and monitoring of the existing Saving Groups
  • Research in rural economy and needs assessment within the area of work
  • Creation of new Saving Groups
  • Analysis of end year saving cycles
  • Conduct a study on the social impact of the work

1. Income Generation Activities

  • Support the development of project proposals providing capacity building on business management
  • Social Projects
  • Research, needs assessment and feasibility study of the 2 potential new social projects: Workshop school and Kindergarden.

b. Research

  1. Project expansion: Explore feasibility of new business possibilities, growing existing tailoring business, expanding projects to surrounding villages
  2. Potential new partnerships: explore and identify new potential partners within the microfinance local organizations
  3. Demographic and geographic data: Collect data about the region such as population, district map, and other useful indicators

c. Other activities as required


  • English fluency 
  • Previous experience implementing Projects within an International Development context is desired
  • Experience with microfinances and basic business development desired• Ability to work independently and to be proactive 
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to identify needs and priorities and respond accordingly 
  • Capacity to work successfully across cultures 
  • Willingness to live in basic living conditions 
  • Some education in and/or experience with project management 
  • Desired experience within Agricultural projects
